Siam Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema 'Siam')

Siam Chinese Evergreen brings bold indoor color to everyday spaces with foliage that feels both tropical and refined. Its red-edged leaves add contrast and warmth to rooms that need more life, making it a strong fit for desks, side tables, counters, and plant stands. This variety offers the decorative appeal of a colorful foliage plant without asking for difficult care or constant attention. In homes and offices alike, it provides year-round interest in a tidy, manageable form.

It is especially useful for growers who want stronger leaf color than a standard green houseplant can provide. The upright, clumping habit helps it stay polished and easy to place, even in smaller spaces. Siam also combines well with darker green foliage plants, where its brighter tones can break up heavier displays. When you want dependable indoor color with an easy routine, this variety is a practical and attractive choice.

Distinctive Features

This Aglaonema is known for its glossy, lance-shaped leaves, which are typically deep green with vivid red to pinkish red margins and stems. The foliage forms a dense, upright clump that gives the plant a lush look without becoming loose or unruly. Like other Chinese evergreens, it may occasionally produce a small spathe and spadix, though the flowers are minor compared with the foliage. Its strong red edging gives it a cleaner, more defined pattern than many heavily mottled Aglaonema selections.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Place in medium to bright indirect light for the best foliage color, while avoiding prolonged direct sun that can scorch the leaves.
  • Soil: Use a rich, well-drained indoor potting mix that holds light moisture but does not remain wet.
  • Water: Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil begin to dry, then water thoroughly and let excess moisture drain away.
  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is generally suitable, though moderate humidity can help maintain the best leaf quality.
  • Zones: Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 10 to 11 and typically grown as a houseplant in colder climates.

Ideal Uses

  • Containers: This plant is well suited to decorative pots for desks, shelves, tabletops, and counters.
  • Indoor Color: Use it to bring lasting foliage color into offices, bedrooms, living rooms, and entry spaces.
  • Mixed Plant Displays: Its red-edged foliage pairs well with green houseplants and helps create more layered indoor arrangements.
  • Focal Point: Use Siam Chinese Evergreen as a focal point in a compact indoor grouping where its red-edged leaves can anchor the display and draw the eye.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Avoid keeping the potting mix constantly soggy, since overly wet conditions can lead to root stress.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep the foliage looking clean and glossy.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced houseplant fertilizer lightly during spring and summer when active growth is strongest.
  • Temperature: Keep it in warm indoor conditions and protect it from cold drafts and temperatures below about 60 degrees F.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a neat and healthy appearance.

Why Choose Siam Chinese Evergreen?

  • Bold Color: The red-edged foliage brings more contrast and visual energy than standard green indoor plants.
  • Easy Care: It is adaptable and forgiving enough for beginners while still offering strong ornamental value.
  • Manageable Habit: Its upright, clumping growth makes it easy to use in apartments, offices, and smaller rooms.
  • Year-Round Appeal: The evergreen foliage keeps the plant attractive in every season without relying on a bloom cycle.
  • Versatility: This variety fits comfortably into modern interiors, tropical collections, and casual indoor plant displays.

Siam Chinese Evergreen is a dependable choice for anyone who wants colorful indoor foliage with a clean, easy presence. Its red-edged leaves, adaptable nature, and tidy habit make it simple to place and rewarding to grow. For interiors that need steady color without extra fuss, this variety offers lasting value.

Caveats for the professional tracker
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
This is a most excellent resource, arguably the best single tracking book that exists (i would argue so, if i had to pick one! And i recommend this book often). However, if you are in a professional field where this legally matters (EIS or ESA decisions on wolverine/fisher/lynx, etc.), take heed: the authors’ methods of measuring tracks are confusing (i.e. - where is the line between substrate/mammal family to determine when claws or ‘posterior’ pads are or are not used in measuring tracks? ) Also, the claim that “an individual animal can show incredible variation in track size” (p.57) is very misleading… Foot size of an individual animal from birth to adult will obviously change, but will not change in a day for the same-aged individual animal regardless of whether it walks in mud or atop rock. The animal’s foot does not change in size, but its track might appear to. This perceived “change” could be easily avoided by using minimum outline measurements (which are not discussed in this book, but can be found in the work by J. Halfpenny and others). I understand their reasons, but please do not refer to this book for legally defensible measuring techniques of rare species!!!! Also please disregard the negative reviewer who said “it’s a very Mythological Approach to how animals move and walk (jsopel),”- they clearly don’t know what that word means… All in all a well-researched and fantastic book that comes from ample and legitimate experience. A great book and happy tracking!

Good but index needs improvement
Format: Paperback
This is a good, comprehensive guide to tracks and sign. However, there is no index of where to find each family, so in order to find a species you have to flip through the entire book looking for the right page. This makes it annoying to use if you are trying to look up information on a particular species or family.

This is a very useful field manual for those interested in detailed traking methodology.
Format: Paperback
I spent many years as interpreter and ranger for the Colorado State Park System, now called CPW—Colorado Parks and Wildlife. We were annually tasked with surveying a given species' presence, density, and range in the park system and surrounding areas. Detailed field manuals were critical to the accuracy of our work, and HOW I WISH I HAD THIS BOOK DURING THAT PART OF MY CAREER. There are few other books I've come across providing detailed, yet very accessible information on how trail sign reflects animal behavior across different conditions, landscapes, and seasons (both weather seasons and mating seasons). One particular aspect of this book I found significantly intriguing was the section on predation—how does a mountain lion take down a mule deer vs. how wolves bring one down. The locations on a prey animal where a certain predator is most likely to attack, showing illustrations, is a remarkable piece of work, and there authors are clearly masters of interpreting tracks and sign! If you want learn about how mammals behave in their native environment, adding this book to your field manual packet will greatly expand your horizons! Busy it, read it, and get outside! Thank you Mr. Elbroch and Mr. McFarland for adding to the wildlife canon!

Great book and very useful tool to have
Format: Paperback
I had the older edition and lived it, but someone at my last job *borrowed* it and I never saw it again. This edition sends even better than the last, and I have that one five stars. Great pictures and the number of species covered means it's good in at least all states I've worked in.
